A Stork’s Journey (2017) aka Richard the Stork, is a German animated film directed by Toby Genkel and Reza Memari. Richard is a sparrow raised by Storks and he is fully convinced that he is a stork too. When time to migrate from Europe to Africa to escape winter arrives, it is broken to him that he is unequipped to make the journey. Richard refuses to accept this and is determined to prove everyone wrong.

After having been left behind, Richard decides to make the journey alone. Along the way he meets, Olga, an eccentric owl with an imaginary friend named Oleg, who become his travel companions. They later meet Kiki, a narcissistic, disco-singing parakeet with his own agenda. The travellers meet an assortment of colourful characters along their journey who aide and challenge them.

The animation is pristine and the attention to detail exquisite. Each bird has distinct features that give a sense of their personalities, including their own flying patterns. The playful dynamics between Olga and Richard is reminiscent of those of an old married couple. Think of them as an avian incarnation of the duo, Ice Cube and Kevin Hart.

A Stork’s Journey is a story about, nature versus nurture and self-acceptance. Watching Richard determined to prove himself as a Stork mirrors the experience of being different and not fitting in.

A Stork’s Journey, is not only fun and engaging, but clever in its observation of human behaviour. It’s worth the price of admission for parents looking for a nice day out with the kids, who will be entertained and learn a lesson about tenacity too.

DIFF runs from 19 to 29 July in various venues across Durban.
