Democrats is a unique film that maps the three-year process of the creation of a new constitution in Zimbabwe. In 2008, President Robert Mugabe gave way to opposition and international pressure to create a new constitution which, after three decades of dictatorial rule, would bring democracy to Zimbabwe. The film follows the work of two lawyers from competing camps who were commissioned to prepare a new constitution. As the constitution is meant to reflect the will of the Zimbabwean people, they organize public meetings at which the people can express their opinions. The process clearly cannot happen without conflict as well as a thorough knowledge of negotiating tactics.

Camilla Nielsson was born in 1973; she has a BA in anthropology from the University of Copenhagen and an MA in visual anthropology from New York University. Nielsson has worked as a producer and media consultant for UNICEF and UNESCO, for whom she directed the short documentary The Children of Darfur (2006), which won the Monte Carlo TV Festival Grand Prix.
