Acclaimed writer and director Radu Mihaileanu teams up with Plantu, a cartoonist with the French daily newspaper Le Monde for the last 40 years, to tell the story of 12 cartoonists from all over the world. The film documents risks cartoonists run into on a daily basis, on their quest for the preservation of democracy often leading them in the in the line of fire. The reactions and debates they provoke give us a subtle insight into the state of freedom of expression and democracy in the world today. 12 loveable lunatics, capture the comic and tragic in all four corners of the earth  with  a  smile  on  their  faces  and  a  pencil  as  their only  weapon.

Stéphanie Valloatto is a French director and writer, known for Cartoonists, Foot Soldiers of Democracy (2014, screened at Cannes IFF), and for directing one of the episodes of the TV Series documentary Empreintes (2007). She has also worked as an actress in the short La Femme Selue a La Robe Bleue (2001).
